Title: Jack Bennington, Grimsby Town Crier
Author: E. Jeffray, photographer, Grimsby and London
Date: October 2016 scan of the orginal c1880? carte de visite

Title taken from the annotation in pencil on the reverse. Is this the same Jack Bennington who was enrolled as a Freeman of Grimsby on 18th August 1898?

A John Kay Bennington of South St Mary's Gate is listed in an 1872 Grimsby directory as 'town crier and cowkeeper'. There's also a Mrs Jane Bennington and Miss Sarah Ann Bennington, schoolmistress, living in South St Mary's Gate. (Sarah Ann is listed as living at 4 Abbey Walk ten years later.)

John Kay Bennington died in 1887, aged 72. So he can't be the Freeman mentioned above. A John H. Bennington was a butcher in Bethlehem Street in 1872. A relative? Later the Freeman?

It's interesting that the photographer had premises in both Grimsby and London.
