A hallmarked (Birmingham 1927) solid silver award medal won by E. G. Ottaway at a Grimsby Show in 1927.

Ernest George Ottaway was listed as a baker at 103 Legsby Avenue, Grimsby in a 1931 directory. Fancy cakes, high-class pastry and confectionery were his speciality - parties catered for! The property appears to be on the corner of Patrick Street, across from the Spar Shop.

Ernest was born in Norfolk in 1886 and he married Viola Gooch in Norwich in 1907. They had at least one child. Later they made their home in Grimsby and established the business. Both died in Grimsby; Ernest in 1949 and Viola in 1971.

Ernest stood in an election for councillor of the Hainton Ward, Grimsby in 1920 (Coop Party). He didn't manage to beat the Labour candidate.

The premises used by the Standard Yeast Company Ltd. in Chiswick, still exist. The award medal was made by Albert Cowley Bloxham of London.

Was it a Bakers & Confectioners Exhibition that took place in 1927 or, perhaps, Grimsby may have held a Lincolnshire Show?
