Fred Bacon is recognised as the official founder and first president of the Grimsby and Cleethorpes YMCA. More can be read about Mr Bacon's drive and initiative which led to the foundation of a YMCA in the town in the book 'Grimsby YMCA - A Rich History'.

Fred, together with the help of his brother Herbert, built up a very successful business as a fish merchant.

Fred Bacon was born in Grainsby, Lincolnshire on the 6th September 1874. He was the eighth of thirteen children born to William and Sarah Bacon (nee Hudson). Fred married Edith Mary Marion Cockerill in Brompton, near Scarborough, on 24th September 1900. They had five children, all born in Grimsby: Frances Maud Bacon, (Fred) Stanley Hudson Bacon, (Edith) Mary Bacon, (Kathleen) Anita Bacon and Dorothy Constance Bacon.

Fred's Grimsby home addresses were: 41 Lambert Road, 147 Legsby Avenue and 45 Abbey Park Road.

Fred's wife died at the relatively young age of 55 leaving Fred to bring up the two youngest daughters with the help of their older siblings. Fred died on 16th March 1966, aged 91.

Bacon relatives still live in Lincolnshire as well as in the USA and Australia. If you can add any additional information to this short history of Fred Bacon's life, please feel free to contact me.
